But our much-loved Australian gums don’t always love us back (especially here in QLD)! In fact, they can be extremely dangerous and cause a lifetime of damage in some cases. In this post, we explore some of the reasons to consider whether you want that big old gum in your backyard or if it’s safer to get it removed.

What are the dangers of gum trees?

Falling limbs from eucalyptus trees have resulted in serious injuries and in certain tragic cases, loss of life. Here on the Sunshine Coast, downed gums have caused a lot of stress for many residents recovering from severe weather in recent years. The last thing you want to see when you walk outside the house is your car squished underneath one. Royal Botanic Gardens’ chief botanist, Brett Summerell, said to ABC Radio Sydney that he could understand the concerns regarding falling gum trees following intense weather conditions throughout the summer. “As much as I love them, I was starting to think a little more nervously about eucalypts. So, I think it’s something people are thinking about,” he added.

Eucalyptus leaves are highly flammable

Throughout Australia, if you want to cut down a tree on your property, even in your own yard, or prune more than a limited percentage of its branches, you usually have to pay for a tree inspection by your local Council before permission is granted.

Regulations may change according to how far the tree is from your property line, and dead trees can usually be removed without a permit unless there is a Vegetation Protection Order (VPO) on your property. If so, you will have to apply for a permit to remove a tree .

Can you trim trees on your property line?

You have the right to trim branches and limbs that extend past the property line, but the law only allows tree trimming and tree cutting up to the property line, and you may not go on to a neighbour’s property or destroy the tree. Trees are as likely as humans to fall ill — and be contagious too. So you must react as quickly as if it were your child or your pet. The Emerald Ash Borer may be causing ash tree leaves to turn yellow and killing the branches. It bores tunnels in the bark and infects it.

Although fungicides can be injected into the tree, they are not reliable and the only way to ‘cure’ an infected tree and protect surrounding trees and vegetation is to chop it down. Here are some cases where tree removal on the Sunshine Coast is advisable:

Cypress canker

There is no cure for this as yet. The infection is apparently carried by water, the wind or pruning tools, and can kill a branch overnight before spreading to the whole tree. If the tree is removed, it should not be replaced with another cypress, as the new tree would be prone to infection.

Oak wilt

This fast-acting fungus is spread by beetles and goes from oak to oak through the roots. Leaves wilt and turn rust-coloured, then die and fall. The tree should be pruned and a trench dug around it.

Root rot

Another fungus that affects the roots of a tree, but it does not necessarily spread.

Citrus gall wasp

If the branches of a citrus tree swell and bulge, the tree may have been infected by the eggs of the citrus gall wasp. Gall wasp infections can be controlled by cutting off the swollen branches before the wasps start spreading to other branches, but there are no sprays are known to control gall wasps, so act quickly.

Anthracnose

This fungus causes problems with damp, growing leaves, holes in existing leaves and defoliation. A tree may be saved by burning the infected foliage.

Kauri Pines (Smooth-barked Kauri)

This tree’s botanical name is Agathis robusta but it’s commonly known by its Maori name Kauri. It is a coniferous tree of the genus Agathis. It is also found in Papua New Guinea and Queensland. The population of Kauri Pines found in the Papua New Guinea region are treated as distinct species Agathis Spathulata.

Piccabeen Palm (Archnontophoenix cunninghamania)

This Australian palm can grow to over 20 meters tall and has beautiful flowers which are violet in colour and also produces red fruits. Its flowers and fruits usually attract birds. The tree flowers are midsummer and are evergreen all year through.

Pandanus Tree (Pandanus spiralis)

This is a shrub that grows up to 10 meters in height. It is comprised of long spiny leaves that are arranged in a spiral manner. It also has a large pineapple-like cluster of fruits. These fruits usually turn orange when they ripen. It is a good place for birds and other wildlife to live in because the spiny leaves offer them protection from predators. Birds and other animals living on these trees also enjoy eating their fruits.

Tea tree

This is a lovely and unique tree with a spectacular colour range from pale yellow to an almost clear appearance. It is a native tree of the South Coast. Tea Tree oil is toxic and should not be put in the mouth. It is traditionally used in low concentrations for essential oils and herbal medicine especially by those looking to cure skin conditions. It is also used in curing acne, dandruff and insect bites.

Paperbark (Melaleuca quinquenervia)

It is commonly referred to as, broad-leaved paperbark or punk tree. It is a small medium-sized tree of the Myrtaceae family. This tree normally grows as a spreading tree for up to 20 meters tall. The tree’s trunk is covered by white and grey papery bark that is very thick. The leaves of this tree are grey-green in colour and are egg-shaped. During the late spring entering autumn, the tree produces white bottle brush looking flowers.

Bunya Pine (Araucaria bidwillii)

This is a large evergreen tree that is coniferous; it is in the plant family Araucariaceae. It grows naturally on the Sunshine Coast. The tree can grow to 169 feet in height. The bunya pine is unique because it’s one of the last surviving species of the Araucaria genus.

Wattles (Acacia spp)

Acacia trees are commonly referred to as Wattles. These trees are a large genus of trees and shrubs in the subfamily Mimosoideae of the pea family Fabaceae. Acacia trees comprise of a plant species native to both Africa and Australia.

Brush Box ( Lophostemon confertus )

This is an evergreen tree that is native to Australia. It is commonly referred to as a pink box, vinegar tree, Brisbane box and Queensland box. This tree has been widely cultivated in some parts of the U.S and many other parts of the world. It is mainly used as a street tree in cities and towns in Australia.

Strangler Figs (Ficus watkinsiana)

This plant grows its roots downwards so as to envelope its host tree while at the same time growing upwards to reach the sunlight. The host tree may at times die and the strangler tree in this instance becomes a columnar tree which usually has a hollow central core. This habit is a result of growing in dark forests where there is a stiff completion for light. Strangler trees have been known to support their host trees during storms.
