Stump Grinding Cost 2021

Arborclimb • Feb 14, 2021

Often, when a tree is removed, the stump is left behind without a second thought. Eventually, the stump may pose a fire hazard, attract unwanted insects or become difficult when mowing or parking cars, and removal is required.

At Arborclimb, we believe that stump grinding is the safest and most effective method for complete tree removal. Our team is here to explain the process and answer some commonly asked questions, including how much it will cost.

What is stump grinding?

Stump grinding uses a specialised machine with a rotating disc and strong teeth to grind a tree stump into small wood chips suitable for mulching. With grinding, the stump is removed to about 30cm below ground level, severing the root system, with the remainder left to decay naturally underground.

When is stump grinding necessary?

Stump grinding can be used any time a tree stump needs to be removed. This may be for aesthetic reasons, health and safety, or to create space for landscaping plans. It can be completed at the same time as a tree is removed, or years later.

Stump grinding is a quicker, more effective and less invasive option than other methods of stump removal, whether by excavating, chemical treatment, burning or manual chopping. Full excavation is particularly invasive, root systems can cover an area several meters larger than the tree.

Can I remove a stump myself?

Stump grinding machines are available from many hire companies. However, the location of the stump, proximity to windows and underground facilities such as gas lines, and building debris including gravel, can turn a simple DIY into a much more expensive emergency clean-up.

Digging up a stump manually is extremely labour intensive, and purchasing backfill can be costly. What’s more, burning or chemical treatment can damage the lawn and other plants.

How much does stump grinding cost?

We’d love to give you a simple answer, but the truth is, it varies! Stump grinding can start from as little as $60 and range to $600 depending on your requirements. The average cost for stump removal in Australia is $95 per stump, and the good news for Sunshine Coast residents is, palm tree stumps are generally cheaper and easier to remove.

Various factors including the size of the tree, the lay of the land, and underground services such as plumbing or gas lines will increase the cost. A very large tree in the backyard with the sloping ground and a nearby fence will cost more than a small tree in a level front yard that can be accessed directly from the street.

A rough estimate can be obtained by measuring the stump across its widest point and multiplying the diameter in centimetres by 3. For more complex situations, multiply by 4.5. For example: 50cm x 3 = $150, or 50cm x 4.5 = $225. Additional costs will apply if you require the mulch removed from the property.
