Fast Growing Shade Trees For A Queensland Backyard

Arborclimb • Oct 07, 2022

In Australia, it can be hard to find any respite from the hot sun in the depths of summer, and with the warm weather just around the corner, now is the perfect time to start preparing. If you want to enjoy your backyard in the summer but still have some shade, one solution is to plant some shade trees in your garden.

However, trees can take years to grow, so you will need to do your research on which trees are best for shade and will also grow the fastest. For ease, here is a list of some of the top fast-growing shade trees to consider.

1. Magnolia

The Teddy Bear Magnolia can reach around 4 metres high and is known for its glossy leaves with a furry underside. This compact tree is great for creating shade and is beautiful in the hotter months when it blooms large white flowers.

The magnolia tree is fairly resilient and can be planted in most climates. Despite this, it needs a lot of watering in order to retain its volume and splendour, so you will need to dedicate some time to its upkeep.

The roots of the tree are not known to be particularly invasive, but as with any tree, there is the risk of root damage if it’s planted too close to your property. For this reason, it is recommended that you plant these at least 50 feet from your house.

2. Japanese Maple

If you want to add some colour and spectacle to your garden alongside the relief of shade, the Japanese Maple is a great choice for you. Typically faster growing in its earlier years, you will be able to benefit from its wide, majestic leaves fairly quickly.

You will need to water your tree up to once a week in the summer season as letting it dry out can cause the leaves to turn brown. It’s also wise to prune the tree every few years in order to maintain its classic shape.

Another benefit of the Japanese Maple is that its roots are very compact and non-invasive, meaning you can plant it as close as 10 feet from your home.

3. Dwarf Flowering Gum (Corymbia Ficifolia)

These impressive trees are known for producing large flowers in comparison to their stature and some varieties can grow up to around 6 metres. For nature lovers, these trees are also great for attracting birds due to their nectar.

Flower gums are fairly tolerant of droughts and don’t have to be watered too regularly, so if you’re looking for something low maintenance, this is the tree for you. The roots are likely to extend at least the width of the tree but they don’t have a hugely vigorous root system and are known for being compact.
