Trees To Avoid Planting In Your Backyard

Localsearch Seo • Feb 20, 2023

Trees can add a gorgeous aesthetic to any backyard, providing shade, beauty and functionality. They can also increase property value and improve the air quality in the surrounding environment. However, certain species can cause more harm than good in your backyard, so it’s important to be mindful when choosing which ones to plant.

Figs

Many fig trees start out as potted plants that are moved to a garden once they grow too tall for indoor settings. However, when planted outside, figs develop into huge trees that can cause headaches for homeowners. Fig trees have invasive roots that spread and take over other plants; they may also crack water pipes or damage your foundations.

Palm Trees

While palm trees can be a popular choice for their tropical look and feel, they often cause problems for homeowners. Certain types are extremely high maintenance and cause mess by dropping fronds, seeds and fruit on the ground below. They’re also known to attract bats and other pests. Certain varieties are classified as a weed species here in Southeast QLD.

Eucalyptus

Most Eucalyptus trees are unsuitable for a typical suburban backyard; they can grow extremely large and develop wide-spread root systems that cause property damage. Additionally, their branches are weak, making them dangerous in extreme weather conditions such as strong winds or storms.

Umbrella Trees

Umbrella trees are a popular choice for their attractive foliage and ease of care in large natural areas like parks. However, they have aggressive root systems that spread rapidly and can take over other plants in surrounding areas. They’re also considered to be ecologically invasive.

Bamboo

There are two types of bamboo; the running variety, such as golden bamboo, can spread significantly and is difficult to control. If you’re set on having bamboo in your backyard, we recommend opting for the clumping species.

Tipuana Trees

While these trees can create beautiful shade in larger parks and outdoor areas, their size typically makes them unsuitable for a backyard. Tipuanas grow and reproduce rapidly, so they can easily get out of control and take over a smaller garden.

Evergreen Alder

Evergreen alders aren’t a great choice for a backyard garden. These trees grow extremely large, with a fast-spreading canopy that will block natural light while the roots use up significant soil space.

Weeping Willow

Weeping willows are known for their graceful, flowing branches and delicate leaves, but there are several reasons why you may want to avoid planting them in your backyard. These trees have a strong suckering habit and can spread quickly. They’re also known for their high water consumption requirements and may not be suitable for areas with limited water resources. Some councils include this tree in their weed list.

Poplar Trees

While poplar trees can seem like a good choice for their fast growth and attractive foliage, they shouldn’t be planted near homes. Poplars love moisture and the roots will travel significant distances to hunt it out, blocking drains and damaging structures in the process. They also have a relatively short lifespan compared to other tree species, meaning they may not be a good long-term investment for your backyard.

Golden Robinia

Golden Robinia is a popular ornamental tree due to its striking yellow foliage. However, there are several reasons why you may want to avoid planting it in your backyard. These trees are prone to suckering. If roots are damaged or obstructed, they’ll produce suckers that can turn up several doors down from the original tree.
